European Football Championship in brief

The UEFA European Football Championship is a football competition of the best national football teams in Europe. The competition is held every four years. The final tournament is preceded by the teams competing in a qualifying process. The first such competition was held in France, 1960, and was called the UEFA European Nations Cup. The organisation of the final tournament has changed over time. Until 1976, only four teams took part in the final tournament. In 1980-1992, eight teams took part and in 1996 this number was increased to 16 and has remained so until today. There are plans to allow 24 national teams to take part in the final tournament, but we should not see this happen before 2016.

• to date, thirteen UEFA tournaments have been held,
• the first two competitions were called UEFA European Nations Cup and it wasn’t until 1968 that the name European Championship was first used – as the name of the competition held in Italy,
• the following nine national teams have won the championship title in the thirteen competitions (interestingly, some of the winning countries have been renamed): Germany (three tournaments, incl. twice as Federal Republic of Germany), Spain and France (two tournaments each), USSR, Czechoslovakia, Denmark, the Netherlands, Italy and Greece (one tournament each),
• the UEFA 2012 championship to be hosted by Poland and Ukraine will be the third UEFA competition to take place in two countries (the first and second competitions were hosted by Belgium and the Netherlands (2000) and Switzerland and Austria (2008)),
• no team has ever succeeded in defending its championship title.
